In this Subject Spotlight, Dr Nicholas Ford introduces you to what entrepreneurship is and looks at why it plays an important role in a constantly developing World. Dr Nicholas then explores some of the skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur, including strategic agility. In episode 3, Dr Nicholas talks about a local business: The Tomato Stall. Dr Nicholas discusses how their adaptability in the face of increasing change has ensured their success. In the final episode, Dr Nicholas sets you an activity which encourages you to analyse the brand of a small business, discusses Oprah Winfrey’s success, and then finally offers you some career advice to think about after you graduate.

Meet the academics

Dr Nicholas Ford

Dr. Nicholas Ford is a Principal Lecturer in New Product Development at the University of Portsmouth. His research expertise focuses on the development and marketing of new fast-moving consumer goods products and packaging (particularly food and drink products). Nicholas has worked with many world-leading consumer goods brands, such as Procter and Gamble, as well as many SMEs and start-ups, to help grow their business through product development. Nicholas has published research exploring the development of new products for older consumers, and is currently engaged in research and knowledge transfer activities surrounding food waste reduction. Nicholas is also involved with research into the role of category managers in own-brand food product development projects, and a critical examination of consumer input to product development projects.
