100 Years of Inspiring Change

In this film we hear from Professor Ken Pounds and his discovery of stellar black holes and super massive black hole. Dr Jo Appleby tells us what it meant to her to be working on the bones of King Richard III. Professor Sir Alec Jeffrey discusses what it was like working at Leicester when he discovered DNA fingerprinting. Professor Neil Chakraborti tells us about the amazing impact his research has on victims of hate, and how The Centre for Hate Studies is changing people’s lives.

What makes us different

We are one of the only two crowdfunded universities in the world. In the academic year 2021/22 we celebrated 100 years since our first students started. Current students, alumni, current and former staff and the local community came together to mark this moment, to reflect on our past, and look ahead. The future is ours to change.
75% of our research was judged to be internationally excellent with wide-ranging impacts on society, health culture,and the environment. That Leicester also entered a substantial proportion of academics (84%) to the REF demonstrates that our academics are continuing to develop and build upon our world-leading research.
